Professional Growth & Development
1
How have you grown as a shelter medicine professional?
Over the course of the UF Shelter Medicine Program, I have grown from viewing animal welfare primarily at the individual patient level to understanding it within a broader population-based and systems-focused framework. Early in my training, I focused heavily on clinical care; however, through coursework and my capstone project, I developed a deeper understanding of how factors such as intake flow, length of stay, housing conditions, and staffing limitations directly influence both medical and behavioral outcomes. This shift in perspective has been one of the most important areas of growth in my professional development.
In addition, I have become more confident in my ability to analyze complex problems and communicate evidence-based solutions. Completing a literature-driven capstone project required me to critically evaluate research, identify patterns, and apply findings to real-world shelter environments. I also strengthened my ability to communicate professionally through presentations and outreach to subject matter experts, which has prepared me to engage more effectively within the field.

What key competencies do you now possess?
Through this program, I have developed several core competencies essential to shelter medicine. These include a strong understanding of capacity for care and population management principles, as well as the ability to recognize how overcrowding impacts disease transmission, behavioral welfare, and overall shelter outcomes. I am also skilled in interpreting and applying shelter data, including metrics such as intake, length of stay, live release rate, and euthanasia trends.
Additionally, I have gained competency in evidence-based decision-making, allowing me to translate research findings into practical recommendations for shelters. I have developed professional communication skills through written work, presentations, and collaboration with field professionals. Finally, I have strengthened my ability to approach animal welfare challenges from a systems perspective, considering both operational constraints and long-term outcomes.

How has this program shaped your professional identity?
This program has solidified my identity as a future veterinary professional who is not only focused on individual patient care but also committed to improving outcomes at the population level. It has reinforced the importance of balancing medical knowledge with practical, real-world solutions that shelters can realistically implement. I now view shelter medicine as a critical intersection of veterinary care, public health, and community engagement.
Additionally, the program has strengthened my commitment to advocacy within animal welfare. My experiences, particularly those related to overcrowding and its consequences, have shaped my desire to contribute to systemic improvements rather than isolated interventions. I see myself as a professional who values evidence-based practice, collaboration, and continuous learning.

What areas do you want to develop next?
Moving forward, I would like to further develop my hands-on clinical skills in a veterinary setting, particularly in areas related to high-volume shelter medicine such as spay/neuter, disease management, and triage in resource-limited environments. While I have built a strong academic foundation, gaining additional practical experience will be essential in preparing for veterinary school and future clinical responsibilities.
I am also interested in expanding my knowledge of data analysis and program evaluation, particularly in how shelters can use data to inform decision-making and improve outcomes. Additionally, I would like to continue developing leadership and communication skills that will allow me to contribute to team-based environments and potentially take on leadership roles within shelter or community-based programs in the future.
